CQ’s Leading Fishing Tackle Supplier with Expert Advice

The latest gear brought to you first from the best tackle supplier in the business.  With thousands of lures to choose from, it takes time for anglers to settle on their favourites.  But once you have success with a certain style of lure, it’s hard to resist the urge to keep using that style of lure.  However, fish get used to the same lure. And the same presentation if placed in front of them time after time.  So it pays dividends to change it up and always keep searching. Find the next lure that the fish will be fooled by.

When it comes to the estuary systems around the Rockhampton region, we find it best to try to match the bait fish that are contained within these systems.  This primarily means that we are looking for a mullet/herring/prawn imitation style lure. That’s why most of the lures that are used for barramundi are between 50mm and 200mm long.  There are exceptions such as bigger soft plastics used in dam situations or fresh water lakes but for the main estuary systems, minnow style hard bodies between 80mm and 150mm is the general go to size lure.  There are multiple brands that offer these styles of lures such as Jackall,  Lucky Craft, Zerrick, Imakatsu, Rapala to name just a few.

When getting in to the intricacies of the hard body lures there is only a couple of considerations to make – do they sink, suspend, float and how deep do they dive?

We stock all types of lures in a range of your favourite colours and styles:

Our expert jigging specialists handpicked tackle

When deep water jigging first kicked off in this area it was primarily catered to by Okto Jigs and Knife Jigs. Over the years this has refined to what now is widely regarded as one of the fastest growing styles of fishing in this area as slow pitch jigging. Which is essentially jigging with a flutter jig designed to imitate a distressed bait fish.

This has expanded into jigging rods, jigging reels, jigging braid and jigging techniques, all of which are giving anglers the opportunity to catch a wider range of species, such as Red Emperor, Red Jew, Nannygai, Red Throat Emperor, Coral Trout and a myriad of other reef species as well as pelagic species like Spanish Mackerel and Cobia/Amber Jack.   If you haven’t tried this style of fishing yet, I would highly recommend it, it’s very addictive!

Living in the CQ area we are blessed with a very diverse range of fishing opportunities from freshwater fishing for Bass and Saratoga west of Rockhampton on freshwater lakes and rivers to the beaches at Yeppoon offering excellent fishing for whiting, dart, permit, flathead and salmon.

Our rivers such as the Fitzroy offer some of the best fishing in Australia for big barramundi and of course threadfin salmon.  These are the 2 standout species but by no means the only species that can be caught as the river is also home to mud crabs, prawns, blue salmon, grunter, bream, fingermark, cod and many more.  Then off the coast of Yeppoon all of the tropical species including mackerel, tuna, marlin, coral trout, red emperor, red jew, nannygai and black jew to name just a few. So you can see we are spoilt for choice, which makes fishing opportunities an all year-round proposition.
